Canary Islands, Spain
Tenerife - Los Gigantes | Playa de la Arena
Sunshine Holidays welcomes you to Tenerife, the largest of the Spanish seven sub-tropical Canary Islands (Las Islas Canarias) which are located 110 km off the Atlantic coast of North Africa.
Dominated by Pico del Teide, which at over 12,000 ft or 3718m is Spain's highest peak, Tenerife is, like the other Canary Islands, formed from volcanic rock.
The island is renowned for its year-round balmy climate, contrasting landscapes of the north (lush - banana plantations, pine, wild flowers) and south (arid - cacti) and friendly atmosphere. The varied altitude and rich volcanic soils have combined to create many endemic plant species, which thrive along with various sub tropical plants.
At Sunshine Holidays we focus on the south west of the island, an area with the best climate and most dramatic sea views, in the area of Santiago del Teide.
The Acantilados de los Gigantes - Cliffs of the Giants - are sheer rock walls which plunge into the ocean. This area is ideal for the more discerning holiday maker as it is not over commercialised.
The small picturesque town of Los Gigantes shelters beneath these magnificent cliffs.
The cliffs are the main attraction of the area and there's a variety of boat trips to chose from, which often include dolphin watching or a trip to the stunning Masca valley.
Village life centres around the harbour area and there's a wide range of local bars and excellent restaurants providing relaxed low-key nightlife. If you are looking for a relaxing holiday in a beautiful location away from hundreds of bars and clubs, this could be the area for you!
1.5 kilometres along the coast is Puerto de Santiago, a traditional Canarian fishing village, and 4 km further is Playa de la Arena, a small resort with one of the finest black volcanic sandy beaches in the area.
Fresh fish is always on the menus often served with the Canarian speciality papas arrugadas (wrinkly potatoes) and mojo, a dip that tends to be either red - chillis - or green - parsley or coriander.
Spain is of course a great wine producing and drinking country and quality wine is also produced in Tenerife.
